Collecting Prescious And Semi-Prescious Gemstones

By Lee MacRae

Why collect loose gemstones you ask? For many people it's because they are very beautiful items. And just like natural diamonds their value increases over time. Many in this hobby love to collect and show case each and every one of the 150 varieties available. Follow along as we examine the loose gemstones hobby.

The first thing you need to do in starting the hobby of collecting gemstones the smart way is by acquiring knowledge about them. By visiting a local library you'll find numerous books on gemstones that will help you to know exactly what you should do.

First, color is a major part in the value of the stone. The closer the color of the gemstone is to its pure spectral color the more valuable it is. Traditional spectral colors are orange, green, yellow, Violet and blue. Colors that tend to be darker or paler diminish the value of the stone.

The cut of your gemstone is one of the most important traits when you consider a gemstone's value. The cut has to be done correctly to reflect light properly. A poor cut will be muted or washed out. Color tone, saturation, and hue will be inconsistent.

Our next consideration is the issue of gemstone clarity. Clarity refers to the the external blemishes or the internal conclusions or flaws of the gemstone under consideration. Any large flaws can easily be seen with the naked eye while others require close examination using a 10X magnification.

Next item to look at is the duo of weight and size. Due to their nature gemstones can vary in density or specific gravity. Size and weight are not necessarily equal from stone to stone. If a diamond of a certain size weighs 1.00 carats then a ruby of equal size would weigh 1.20 carats. An Emerald of equal size would be approximately 0.95 carats while an Alexandrite gem stone would came in at 1.23 carats.

Though you may find gemstones used a lot in jewelry, they are a great hobby and pastime as well. Actually there are many interesting and attractive gems that are too fragile or too large to be used in jewelry. Here's a suggestion -- don't think of a gem as a component of jewelry; consider it as a piece of art and value it for its unique nature and vibrant colors. And in this hobby you don't have to always lay out cash because you can use vacation time to actually hunt for raw gemstones in stead of buying. In the United States in Pennsylvania you can find Amethyst, Almandite Garnet and Pyrope Garnet, Beryl, Sunstone and Moonstone. And in Canada you can find nephrite jade in Mount Sidney Williams, British Columbia or amazonite (microcline) near Lac St-Jean, Quebec and even black spinel in Burgess and bathhurst Townships in Ontario. Take up gemstone collecting and you won't regret it.

Hunderds of minerals have been cut as gems. Of these, some are considerably
rarer than the popular gems. A good example is Californias state gem, benitoite
. This is one of the better known of the rare gems, both because it is the state
s gem and because the notoriety the Gemological Society of America has given it
. They use it as an example in their classes of a beautiful and durable gem that
will never have a significant impact on the market because of its limited
availability.

Synthetic gemstones are real gemstones in that their mineral composition is
exactly the same as those in nature. The only difference is that they are made
by humans in a short amount of time versus by nature over hundreds of thousands
of years. Created stones are always less valuable than natural stones because
they are less rare. Generally, created stones are only available for more
expensive gemstones such as diamonds, rubies, sapphires and emeralds. One
example of a widely accepted created gemstone is the cultured pearl: very
prevalent even in the most elite jewelry.
