How To Start Loose Gemstone Collecting

By Lee MacRae

Many people today say collecting loose gemstones or loose diamonds is their favorite hobby. They love the colors and the beauty of the various gemstones found around the world today. Read long as we look at a number of factors you should understand when starting to collect varieties of gemstones yourself.

The very first step in starting the hobby of collecting gemstones the proper way is by acquiring knowledge about them. By taking a quick trip to the library or local bookstore you can find books on the subject that will make you an informed buyer.

The chief thing you need to consider will be gemstone color. You'll want the gemstone that is as close as possible to the pure colors of the spectrum. This means orange, red, violet, green, yellow, and blue. Generally, the prices very pale or very dark precious and semi precious stones are lower.

The cut of the gemstone is one of the most important traits in evaluating gemstones. The stone has to be cut correctly to reflect light properly. A poor cut can't reflect the light consistently over its surface. The color hue, color tone and saturation will always appear inconsistent

Another factor to look at is the clarity of the gemstone. This means the purity of the gemstone or the lack of internal inclusions, particles or spots within the crystal structure. Without a doubt, zero flaws are hard to find and make your stones very valuable.

Next thing to look at is the duo of weight and size. Due to the fact gemstones can vary greatly in density and specific gravity. Weight and size are not necessarily equal across the board. Take the example of a diamond that weighs 1.00 carats and an equal sized ruby would weigh 1.20 carats instead. An equal sized Emerald would be 0.95 carats while an Alexandrite gem stone would came in at 1.23 carats.

Getting involved in collecting gemstones can become an enjoyable pastime and could be rewarding as well over time. You can start small and don't have to spend a lot of money and yet you can buy some very beautiful items. Many people love to set aside vacation or weekend time to go hunting gemstones. Take the example of the United States. In Texas You can find Beryl, Pearl and Tourmaline. Or ou can take a longer vacation and find opal in Coober Pedy, Andamooka or Mintabie in South Australia, topaz in Mt Surprise or O'Briens Creek in Queensland, Australia or hunt specimens the quartz regions in Wave Hill in the Northern Territory of Australia.
