Starting The Hobby Of Gemstone Collecting

By Lee MacRae

Why would anyone collect items like loose gemstones, you ask? For many people it's because they are very beautiful items. And just like natural diamonds they can appreciate in value over time. Many people love to collect and show case the wide variety of gemstones available today. This article will look at the hobby of collecting loose gemstones.

The first thing you need to do in becoming a gemstone collector the proper way is by getting adequate knowledge about them. By taking a quick trip to the library or local bookstore you'll find numerous books on gemstones that will help you to know exactly what you should do.

Of paramount importance is the color of the gemstone. Gemstones at the top of the ladder have pure colors there as close as possible to the exact spectral color of violent, blue, green,, orange or red. Gemstone colors that are somewhat muted or on the dark side lowers the value per carat.

How the gemstone has been cut is the next factor to consider. The preciseness of the cut is the factor that determines the amount of light is reflected by the gemstone. The cut will determine the brilliance of the stone and its final value.

Another factor to consider is the clarity of the stone under consideration. This is talking about the gemstones purity or the lack of internal inclusions, internal particles or spots within the crystal. Obviously, stones with a lack of flaws will make a gemstone very valuable.

Next to consider are size and weight. Except for corals and pearls, all gemstones are priced by the unit, carat. A carat is equal to 0.2 grams. Be aware however, that size and weight and gemstones are not the same. The density and specific gravity can differ in stones. Take a diamond that is 1.00 carats in weight and you will find that a similar sized sapphire or ruby weighs out at 1.20 carats.

Taking up the hobby of gemstones can be very enjoyable and rewarding in the long run. It doesn't have to be very expensive and yet you can buy some very beautiful items. Many people love to take vacations to go hunting for raw gemstones. For example in Florida you can find Chalcedony and Conch Pearl. And if you like to travel farther you can find opal in Coober Pedy, Andamooka or Mintabie in South Australia, topaz in Beechworth, Victoria or hunt specimens the quartz regions in Wave Hill in the Northern Territory of Australia.
